Eur Ing STEVEN MCFADYEN

Technical Expertise

Medium Voltage Distribution

Experience of medium voltage distribution system up to 33 kV. This has included substation design for power supply utilities, distribution in petrochemical and industrial plants and township reticulation.

Experienced in the design, installation and commissioning of all medium voltage equipment including transformers (up to 44 MVA), GIS and AIS switchgear (both indoor and outdoor), protection relays and transformer voltage regulation control, reactive power, insulation coordination, earthing and lightning protection and associate SCADA systems specific to this type of environment.

Low Voltage Distribution

Fully familiar with all elements of low voltage distribution from simple radial systems to achieving Tier IV certification in mission critical facilities. Familiar with all relevant standards for installation (IEE Wiring Regulations, IEC60364, Hong Kong, China, New Zealand and Middle East regulations, etc.). Working knowledge of NEC and US practices in addition.

Individual areas/equipment are too numerous to mention, but if it is related to low voltage distribution I have probably some direct experience. If not direct experience, the knowledge to I have gained will make using anything unconventional or one off no problem at all.

400 Hz Power Systems

Detailed knowledge of 400 Hz power systems, particularly for Airports and maintenance hangers. This includes frequency convertors (centralized and stand alone), voltage regulation and maintaining aircraft required power characteristics and cabling and associated handling systems (PITS, Winding Systems, etc.).

Building Services

Signification experience of all design, construction and commissioning elements for large (high rise and special function) building. This experience covers main utility MV intake, low voltage distribution, busbar trunking systems, cables and containment, standby and UPS power, lightning protection, lighting and control, Building Management Systems, Fire alarm systems and sustainability rating systems.

Experience has been through the full building life cycle from concept, design, tender, construction, commissioning and operation. Fully able to deal with the challenges of dealing with utilities and supply authorities, architects, other third parties and permitting and approvals.

Motors

Design installation and commissioning for motors form a few kW to the MW range at low voltage, 6.6 kV and 11kV. Largest motor was the design of the 18MW synchronous compressor motor and associated protection/soft starter systems for the Air Separation Plant at Mossgas.

Able to work with asynchronous and synchronous motors, fully experienced with variable frequency drive systems (low voltage and medium voltage), motor starting including direct online, star delta, wound rotor variable resistance and soft starting and the design automated motor control centres.

Electrical Protection Systems

Extensive electrical protection experience on power and industrial systems (up to 33kV), covering fault level studies, relay selection, discrimination studies, system design, commissioning and troubleshooting. This has been on a variety projects ranging from small local motor control panels to large petrochemical plants and power stations and I would consider protection systems as one of my specialist areas.

Knowledge ranges from theoretical (i.e. transient stability studies using, fault level calculations, etc.) to hands-on practical (actual testing and commissioning, investigation of intermittent tripping, etc.). Fully familiar numerical protection relays and implementing substation systems to IEC 61850. Experience and knowledge of software such as DIgSILENT, ATP/EMTP, etc.

Discrimination (design, studies and fault finding) is an area I have extensive experience of. Design, commissioning and setting of protection systems to achieve the best possible operation under abnormal conditions.

Standards

I have an in depth knowledge and I am very keen on promoting the application of standards, particularly IEC. Actively championed the adoption of IEC standards (including document production) and development of in house design standards with a focus on improving the quality of work while reducing time and cost.

Control and Automation

Extensive control and automation system experience ranging from small local control schemes to large multi-million dollar facilities. This has covered a wide range of systems, field enterprise level, hardware, software, system integration, installation and commissioning.

During my career I have designed, installed, commissioned and used various automation systems and been involved with many technologies. These technologies include

  • Industrial process automation and building management systems
  • PLC (particularly Siemens and Alan Bradley) and DDC (Metasys, APOGEE)
  • Fieldbus systems (particularly AS-Interface) and Safety at Work
  • Sensors (analog, digital, pulse, flow, temperature, level, stress, etc.)
  • Protocols such as Profibus, Modbus, IEC61850, LonWorks, BACnet, etc.
  • TCP/IP (routers, switches, physical, gateways, converters, VoIP, etc.)
  • SCADA and HMI/MMI (WinCC, InTouch, Genesis, SCX6etc)
  • Theory (analysis, modeling, tuning, fuzzy logic, etc.)
  • Programming (ladder, function diagram, statement list, visual basic, etc).
