Biography
Since graduating I have spent over twenty years working in electrical
engineering (including automation and control). Most of this has been
overseas and has seen me living and working in various countries including the
UK, South Africa, China, Hong Kong, New Zealand and the United Arab Emirates.
Half my working life has been with consultants and the rest in construction
(mainly client side with a brief spell for a contactor).
Some of the larger internationally recognised projects I’ve been involved with
include Mossgas in South Africa, Hong Kong International Airport and Hong Kong’s
KCRC West Rail Project. Numerous other projects range from petrochemical
to buildings and have included large machines such as coal stackers/reclaimers
and precipitators, power distribution substations and township reticulation,
large pumping stations, pharmaceutical manufacturing, data centres, high rise
multiuse buildings and rail stations.
Having worked on a diverse range of project has given me the opportunity to be
involved with all types of interesting electrical stuff, including substations
and distribution up to 33 kV, motors and control (from factional kW up to an 18
MW synchronous motor), 400 Hz power systems, protection systems (from LV
distribution up to 640 MW generator protection), high rise buildings (power,
structured cabling and fire alarm) amongst others.
My career path started as a hands-on engineer over time evolving into more of a
project and design management role. Currently I’m based in Dubai leading
the electrical team for Arup Gulf Limited.
While not working I spend time with family, enjoy reading, travelling and
visiting new places and spend time playing MMORPG’s. Sailing and hiking
are activities I do enjoy, but recently I’m finding I don’t have much time to do
these. myelectrical.com is something I spend quite a bit of time working
on (sort of a hobby if you can call it that). I started the site a few
years ago, keep updating it when the urge takes me and try to keep it running on
a day to day basis.
